Joe Carmichael
I’m a software developer working for a small business in Naperville. I earned my undergraduate degree in chemistry from the University of Illinois and a master’s in computer science from DePaul University. More importantly, I’m a husband to an amazing nurse and a proud dad—I have two children at Jefferson, with my youngest joining soon.
I first got involved in local government after my children tested high for lead. A simple window replacement turned into a bureaucratic nightmare due to an unresolved city permit issue. That experience made me realize residents shouldn’t have to go through elected officials just to receive basic city services. I ran for office to change that.
What Drives Me
Fiscal Responsibility
As a Berwyn homeowner, I understand the financial pressures on families. I was one of only two aldermen to vote against the 275% salary increase for aldermanic wages. I’ve consistently supported lower tax levy options and voted against unnecessary vanity projects, prioritizing infrastructure that saves money long-term.
Rat Abatement
Rats are a serious problem in Berwyn. I co-created the Ad-Hoc Rat Abatement Committee, secured increased funding, and helped get a dedicated staff member focused on the issue. I organized alley and Roosevelt Road cleanups and pushed for citywide garbage can replacements to keep Berwyn cleaner and safer.
Transparent Communication
Since taking office, I’ve prioritized communication by visiting every home in the 8th Ward, sending newsletters, and holding quarterly ward meetings. I distribute flyers and door-knock blocks for alley cleanups and events to keep residents informed and engaged.
Modernizing City Services
With my background in computer science, I’m passionate about using technology to improve government efficiency. Upgrading our city’s tech infrastructure will streamline operations, eliminate reliance on paper records, and allow residents to access city services online, making local government more user-friendly.
