Michael Bane

I’m a community advocate and candidate for alderman in Berwyn’s 7th Ward. I earned my undergraduate degree in microbiology and chemistry before studying law at DePaul University. More importantly, I’m a dedicated parent and an active member of my community—I have a 7-year-old daughter who keeps me on my toes.

Throughout my career, I’ve worked to support people in socioeconomic distress, ensuring they have access to the resources and opportunities they deserve. One of my greatest honors was serving as president of the board of directors for a domestic violence charitable organization, where I helped lead efforts to protect and empower survivors. My passion for local government comes from firsthand experience navigating systemic barriers, and I believe city services should work for all residents, not just those who know how to fight for them.

What Drives Me

Fiscal Responsibility

Berwyn residents are feeling the strain of rising property taxes as the city continues to increase the tax levy. Meanwhile, leadership approved a 275% aldermanic pay raise without properly considering funding sources. It’s an irresponsible decision that places an even greater burden on taxpayers and is especially distasteful at a time when so many families are struggling with inflation and rising costs.

Rather than treating taxpayers like a blank check, we need to eliminate inefficiencies and waste to ease the financial strain on residents. As alderman, I will fight for responsible budgeting and smart spending that prioritizes essential services—not reckless spending on vanity projects and special interests.

Communication and Accessibility

Too many wards in Berwyn have aldermen who are difficult to reach or simply absent when residents need them. Transparency and accessibility should be the standard, not the exception. Residents deserve to know what’s happening in their city, their ward, and how it affects them.

As alderman, I will ensure open and consistent communication with 7th Ward residents. I will hold regular ward meetings to discuss important issues, send newsletters to keep everyone informed, and establish a central location for updates and city news. Whether it’s through in-person meetings, emails, or an easily accessible online platform, my goal is to make sure every resident has the information they need and a direct line to their alderman.

Too Many Gaming Machines—At What Cost?

Berwyn has far exceeded its original limit on gaming machines, yet the current administration continues pushing through more with little regard for the consequences.

While a limited number can provide benefits, unchecked expansion comes at a cost. Too many gaming machines can hurt small businesses by diverting spending from restaurants and shops. They prey on lower-income residents, worsening financial struggles, and can increase crime, including theft and fraud tied to gambling addiction.

Beyond the financial impact, an overabundance of gaming machines makes a city feel less family-friendly and more like a gambling hub. When every other business is a gaming café or bar with machines, it changes the character of our neighborhoods, pushing out diverse local businesses and creating an atmosphere that feels less safe and welcoming. As alderman, I will fight to rein in unchecked expansion and ensure responsible limits that protect businesses, neighborhoods, and residents.
